China Exchange Initiative

The China Exchange Initiative (CEI) Serves to foster partnerships between schools in the U.S. and in China. CEI promotes a number of educational projects including student, teacher and principal exchanges. I applied to be part of the 2006-07 principal exchange. We were fortunate to host Assistant Principal Zhang Xianzhen, from the #1 Senior Middle School (what we in the US would consider a high school) in Yiyang City, Hunan Province last fall in North Reading.

As Superintendent of Schools in North Reading, MA, my goals are to:

1. Develop a broader personal understanding of China.
2. Explore ways in which students in North Reading can obtain a wider perspective on global education.
3. Establish a China Studies Program in North Reading.

I will travel to China with a group of school principals and superintendents. We will visit sites in Xian, Beijing and Shanghai and attend workshops on Chinese history, government, economics and education. The highlight of the trip will be the opportunity to visit the #1 Senior Middle School in Yiyang City at Zhang Xianzhen's school.
